Equality Illinois Celebrates Precious Brady-Davis’ Historic Appointment to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District
Brady-Davis will be the first openly Black Trans woman appointed to public office in Cook County History and the first to serve on a water reclamation district in the United States

Chicago - Today, Governor JB Pritzker appointed Precious Brady-Davis to serve as the next Commissioner at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, filling the vacancy created by Kim DuBuclet’s appointment to the Illinois General Assembly.

Precious is the first Black Trans person appointed in Cook County history and also the first Trans person to serve on a water reclamation board in United States history. She currently serves as the Associate Communications Director at Sierra Club and for the past 6 years has led robust campaigns that have protected our waterways, advanced clean energy, and fought climate change.

No stranger to being the first, she is a longtime advocate of human rights and public health, along with being a nationally respected social justice advocate, author, and leader within the LGBTQ+ and Environmental communities.

Trans people remain severely underrepresented in all levels of government. Equality Illinois believes strongly in LGBTQ+ representation in all roles of civic leadership. We thank Governor Pritzker for his commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and for making this historic appointment of a qualified Trans person to public office.

In response, Brian C. Johnson, Equality Illinois CEO, released the following statement:

“Over the years, Precious has been a dedicated public servant who brings out the best in us all and has never backed down from advocating in what she believes in passionately. Now more than ever, we need Trans voices in rooms of power. Precious will be a powerful voice for change in protecting Lake Michigan, the source of our drinking water, and will inspire more Trans people across the country to run for public office.

At a time when entities are attempting to roll back civil rights and erase Trans people from existing, Equality Illinois celebrates today’s historic appointment and looks forward to working with Commissioner Precious Brady-Davis.”
